No two kids give up their diapers at the same time. But when it’s time, it’s time – so here are some tips to help make the transition to the toilet smoother. They’re techniques we’ve used to help Shamu control his potty. And they may work well for your kids, too!
Start small
Even if your child just walks into the bathroom – that can be a great first step. So make sure you reward every little effort along the way. Whether he just says “potty,” points to the bathroom or just sits on the potty, let your child know you’re happy he’s trying.
Reward every effort
Once your child knows he’ll be rewarded for trying, he’s set up for success. So keep building on every effort, and you’ll ultimately reach your goal.
Set up for success
What inspires all mammals to use the potty? Liquid. So try offering a cup of juice, waiting the proper amount of time and asking for potty. Or always try to potty a half-hour or so after dinner. Whenever you suspect the time is right, bring your child to the bathroom.
Stay patient... and stay positive
Kids can take months to master this skill. But that’s okay. All behaviors take practice. So even if “practice” gets a little messy, try to find the humor and keep things light.
Sometimes, it may seem like you’ll never say good-bye to diapers. But you will! Just stay positive and keep trying. It’s the best way we know to build a great relationship between parents and kids. And kids and their potty.
